WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
“To send an alcoholic through a treatment center and out onto the street before he or she is strong enough to make it on their own, is probably a waste of money and effort.” I lifted this from an article I wrote for another reason about ten years ago, because I think it graphically provides a reason for the Alano Club to have existed for twenty-five years. All of us need to further improve sobriety through reading, discussions, meetings, lectures and textbooks. The Alano Club provides all of these facilities along with a supportive environment to improve the attitude and healthy lifestyle in the community. We offer some forty-six meetings per week and reach close to thirty thousand people per year. True, many do not get the message, but it’s there for all who sincerely want to stay sober. I know my sobriety came about because so many others who also suffered my addiction were here to teach, cajole, and generally pamper me back to the land of reality. “The Club” was there for me when I needed a lift, advice or perhaps a right cross to my brain to set me straight. I will be the first to admit that a discount of food and beverage and the social aspects involved, are not substantial reasons for becoming a member. However, your interest and desire to help assure that the Alano Club will be here for others who need help, just as you and I did, is a giant step in the right direction. Unfortunately, the idea of “GIVING” often does not rear its head until we hit rock bottom and suddenly realize that recovery does not happen by osmosis. It takes people who care. “GIVING’ is what sobriety is all about. So please, spread the word, we desperately need more members to continue the job. And when you ask someone to join the Alano Club and they say: “What is in it for me?” Tell them: “You’ll be getting the great satisfaction of knowing you are doing your part to keep the Alano Club operating for those who will follow.” Thank you, And I Love Ya’ All,
